Water

The paved area on the airport premises extends across a total of approx 160 ha, with the corresponding high amount of surface water in the case of rain.

This water is predominantly environmentally safe and can be fed into the Tarpenbek, a small river which runs right past the airport premises. The airport monitors the water, which flows into the Tarpenbek, with regards to its quantity and the harmful substances it could potentially contain.

In order to ensure that the drainage water does not exceed certain limits, there are a total of nine rain retention basins in which the water can be stored temporarily as needed.
Twenty-seven separator systems of different sizes are installed on the airport premises which prevent pollution due to oils and fuels.

The Water Protection Officer Volker Budde has also been assigned by the Environment administrative department and will be happy to answer any questions.

De-icing of aircraft
De-icing procedures are exclusively carried out on sealed apron areas. Whenever it rains, the de-icing agent dripping onto the ground mixes with the surface water.

A TOC facility continuously and automatically monitors the concentration of glycol in the water to avoid water which contains more than 50 mg per litre flowing into the Tarpenbek.

Rainwater utilisation system
In the bathrooms in Terminal 1, drinking water has been replaced by rainwater for toilet flushing purposes. The facility has a capacity of 350 m³ to collect the rainwater running off the roof of the terminal. If no rainwater is available due to prolonged dry periods, a back-up supply of drinking water ensures that the connected sanitary facilities can still be used.
