- A first: more than 13 million passengers in one year - Hamburg Airport reports 4.6 percent passenger growth
In its 100th birthday year, Hamburg Airport set a new passenger record, with 13.56 million passengers passing through Hamburg Airport in 2011. This is around 600,000 passengers – or 4.6 percent – more than in 2010.
The growth in passenger numbers was primarily the result of the deployment of larger aircraft. The seating capacity per flight rose from 131 to 137, and the maximum take-off weight per aircraft movement increased by 3.5 percent (comparing 2010 with 2011). The number of aircraft movements, in contrast, increased by just 0.6 percent to 158,088 in comparison to the previous year.
Michael Eggenschwiler, Chief Executive Officer at Hamburg Airport, is delighted by the passenger growth. “With commitment and foresight, Hamburg Airport mastered the challenges presented last year and surpassed the 13 million passenger mark for the first time. And this despite the fact that Germany’s Aviation Tax weakened growth. As well as committed and friendly staff, we also offer passengers in Hamburg an attractive route network, short walking distances and a comfortable journey – from the approach to the airport through to landing at their destination. This pays off.”
On average, 37,149 passengers passed through Hamburg Airport each day in 2010, with a daily average of 433 aircraft movements (216.5 take-offs and 216.5 landings).
New routes in summer timetable 2012
In 2011, 60 airlines operated direct flights from Hamburg to 115 destinations in Germany, Europe and around the world. And new routes are being added in 2012. Lufthansa has announced that it will expand its Hamburg summer timetable. The airline will fly twice weekly to St Petersburg and Venice and once weekly to Dubrovnik and the Channel Island of Jersey. Air France is also increasing its commitment to Hamburg. The airline, steeped in tradition, will add four weekly flights to Marseilles to its schedule in March 2012, and five flights per week to Toulouse from April 2012.
Outlook for 2012
Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, foresees a further upward trend for the airport for this year. “We are taking the momentum from 2011 with us into the next year and view the future with optimism. Hamburg Airport is expecting growth of around 3 percent. We offer our passengers a route network with great variety and a significant level of comfort. For our staff, we are a dependable employer; for our customers, we are a reliable partner. This is not going to change. We have set ourselves the challenge of further improving service for passengers.”
